Driving Directions to St. Paul Downtown Airport via MapQuest®
In the mid-20 th Century, St. Paul Downtown Airport (Holman Field) vied with Minneapolis' airport to become the area's primary air transportation center. Ultimately, the Minneapolis airport became what is now Minneapolis-St. Paul International and St. Paul Downtown became the metro area's primary facility for private business aviation.
St. Paul Downtown Airport is the only reliever airport in the MAC system with a runway longer than 5,000'. In fact, the airport has three runways: Runway 14-32, with 6,491' x 150'; Runway 13-31, with 4004' x 150', and Runway 9-27, with 3,642' x 100'. The airport has precision instrument approaches top Runways 14 and 32, non-precision instrument approaches to Runways 14, 31 and 32, and a published precision instrument approach procedure for helicopters. Two fixed-base operators provide services such as fueling, flight training and maintenance.
The FAA towered-facility is nestled along the Mississippi, with scenic limestone bluffs on one side and downtown St. Paul on another. In 2008, a floodwall was installed to help protect the facility against river flooding. Aircraft arresting systems designed to help stop planes that overrun runways were installed on runways 14 and 32 for an added measure of safety.
There were 110,846 takeoffs and landings in 2008. There are 100 aircraft based at the facility.
